Preventive Dentistry
What is preventive dentistry?
Preventive dentistry means having your mouth examined by a dentist on a regular basis, preferably twice a year. In addition to preventing advanced cavities and gum disease, these semi-annual visits might identify other serious issues like tooth wear, fracturing, worn-out fillings, oral cancer, TMJ (joint) disorder, halitosis or gingivitis.
Why is preventive dentistry important?
Teeth are prone to many different types of damage. The bacteria in your mouth produce acids that demineralize (weaken) tooth structure. The process, known as caries or tooth decay, causes no pain until the decay reaches the pulp, where the nerves are located.
How often should I visit my dentist?
Preventive dentistry means having your mouth examined by a dentist on a regular basis, preferably twice a year. The Risks of Inaction or Procrastination
If you wait until you can feel the pain from tooth decay, it is already too late to use a simple filling. Instead, a root canal treatment is needed, which can cost 10 to 15 times more than a filling.
Another painless process that can cause you to lose your teeth is periodontal (gum) disease. Often, patients do not seek treatment for gum disease until it is too late to manage it with a simple, effective treatment.
